Herbal Laundry Detergent

Have you started feeling that 145% discomfort?

Well, don't let it affect your household cleaning regimens. You just might have everything you need in your home apothecary. These funky, little berries can help save you a lot of $$$ and help improve you and your family's health.

What am I talking about?

Soapnuts (also known as soapberries) are a 100% natural alternative to chemical-based cleaners—and they’re surprisingly versatile. These small, berry-like fruits contain saponin, a natural surfactant that cleans gently but effectively. Bonus: they’re biodegradable, eco-friendly, and perfect for sensitive skin!

Used in other cultures for centuries, it's time you tap into a natural remedy that can not only clean your clothes, your hair, your body but can also clean your house.

I want to share my herbal recipe for our cost-effective laundry detergent and near the end of this post, I'll also include a few other ways to incorporate Soapnuts into your life.

First, I collected approximately 2 oz each of fresh Lemongrass & Rosemary. You can also use dried if you don't have access to fresh. I added 5 Soapnuts and the herbs to 2 cups of water, covered then brought it to a boil. Then I turned down the heat and allowed this herbal brew to simmer for about 10 mins. Next, I turned off the heat and allowed it to steep, covered for 2 hours.

Here's where I leveled up the cleaning power:

Borax & Arm and Hammer Washing Soda.

In a 2 gallon bucket, I added 1 gallon of water, ½ cup of Borax and ½ cup of Washing Soda.

Then I stirred until it dissolved.

Then the magick began. I strained the herbal infusion ( separating the Soapnuts for later use and composted the herbs), added it to the bucket and stirred everything together. Next, I added additional water to fill to the rim and allowed it to sit overnight.

And VIOLA! I made an Herbal Laundry Detergent! If you want to enhance the aroma even more, try adding in essential oils like Lemongrass or Rosemary.

How do I use it? I add 1 scoop of the liquid to a full load or 1/2 scoop to a half load to the liquid compartment of the washing machine. That's it!

And before you ask,

1. Our machine is a HE and it's safe for it.

  1. The clothes are not stained from the tea.

  2. It will last up to 6 months but you'll most likely use it all before then.

  3. You can use any herb that has a great smell: Lavender, Lemongrass, Lemon Balm, Peppermint, Rosemary, Basil.

  4. It does not have bleaching properties.

  5. It's safe for kids.

Now, you don't have to make detergent. You can just toss 4–6 soapnuts in a small cloth bag and add it directly to your washing machine. They can be reused for 4–5 loads. Your clothes will come out fresh, soft, and chemical-free.

Want a few more ways to use them?

👇🏾

•Multi-Surface Cleaner: Boil a handful of soapnuts in water for 30 minutes. Let it cool, strain, and pour the liquid into a spray bottle. Use it to clean countertops, glass, and bathroom surfaces. Add some Lemon essential oil for a stronger solution.

•Dishwashing Liquid: Mix soapnut liquid with a bit of lemon juice or vinegar for a natural dishwashing solution. It cuts grease without the need for harsh chemicals.

•Shampoo or Body Wash: Soapnuts are gentle enough for skin and hair. Blend the liquid with essential oils or aloe vera for a nourishing cleanser. Or make a decotion of Rosemary (to encourage circulation to the scalp and promote hair growth) and Horsetail (to strengthen hair and reduce breakage) or Lavender and/or Pau D'Arco (for dandruff) and blend into the shampoo.

Now, why should you try them other than for saving money?

👇🏾

•Reduced Chemical Exposure: Replacing synthetic detergents and cleaners with soapnuts helps minimize contact with potentially harmful ingredients like sulfates, parabens, and artificial fragrances.

•Gentle on Skin: Perfect for those with eczema, allergies, or sensitive skin, soapnuts clean without causing irritation or dryness.

•Respiratory Relief: Conventional cleaners often emit fumes that aggravate asthma and allergies. Soapnuts are fume-free, reducing respiratory stress indoors.

With soapnuts, you’re not just cleaning your home—you’re cleaning up your health!

Pick up a few during your next visit to the herban spot for HEAL.th and WELL.ness and give them a try to feel the difference!
